black bear catapult

You can always count on the Scotland based imprint Bearsuit for your occasional sonic diet of the erratic and skewed. Not known for their playing by the rules abilities, they’ve forged a path that’s been beautifully bizarre and crookedly wayward not to mention so left field it’s on a different pitch whilst all the daubed with a sunny sided childlike innocence. Latest to their slyly expanding canon, a two track release sneaked out by Black Bear Catapult, a meeting of warped minds between Ippu Mitsui and Jimmy Finlayson, the latter of whom goes under so many musical disguises it’s a surprise he doesn’t suffer an identity crisis and more to the point, I think I’m right in saying, is Bearsuit main man accounting for the majority of these releases in some small shape or other, it all gets terribly confusing. Anyhow, two tracker, incidentally titled ‘the laughing house’ of which only the lead track ‘Leopold checks in at the laughing house’ is available on the band camp previewer. As ever with Bearsuit groove, both surreal and abstract, black bear catapult craft an oddly alluring palette which aside destined to appeal to those folk much missing the ear wares of Soft Bodies, manages to wander along a crookedly lysergic landscape that strays delightfully between minimalist glitch groove, 70’s pastoral nostalgia – with a subtle nod to Ghost Box et al, mutant lounge dialects, quirky jazz doodles and the lost art of fun, file under screwball and sit it alongside your early Casino vs. japan and frank wobbly and sons oddities.  https://bearsuitrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-laughing-house?fbclid=IwAR3uWglHdU-Qoc6mjEh6NzDRtZ86xbW4GbGVv-ihYc8GPVaGELWWxCnLRq4
